Three deepwater quays at Horvnes, a few minutes north of the town, give Sandnessjøen the backbone of an offshore supply base rather than a container port. Established in 2008, the Helgeland logistics base serves the Norne, Skarv and Aasta Hansteen oilfields plus exploration drilling off the Norwegian coast, and its quays also take general-cargo, container and bulk vessels as required. Alongside offshore work, the port handles fishing, coastal traffic and a Hurtigruten coastal-route call, but it is not a deep-sea container liner port. The Helgeland hinterland is reached by road and coastal shipping, without a direct rail link. For pure container volumes, Bodø or Mo i Rana are the practical alternatives, while Sandnessjøen excels at offshore supply, project cargo and regional breakbulk.
