Sandefjord is situated in the county of Vestfold on the Oslofjord, about 92 kilometres southwest of Oslo, and is known as a ferry port on the short crossing to Strömstad in Sweden. Fjord Line and Color Line together offer up to four daily sailings, with crossing times of approximately 2.5 hours. The railway station (Vestfoldbanen) and bus terminal are within walking distance of the ferry quay. Color Line operates its terminal at Strandpromenaden 20. Fjord Line has announced plans for a new, modern and environmentally friendly ferry terminal in Sandefjord, a project first unveiled in 2018 with a target completion date of 2025. No cargo handling takes place in Sandefjord; all infrastructure is geared exclusively to passenger ferries. Historically the city was a major centre of the Norwegian whaling industry.
