San Pedro de Macorís sits on the Río Higuamo in the Dominican province of the same name and is the country's oldest harbour, built in the late 19th century to export sugar. Today it is the main bulk and liquid terminal outside Santo Domingo. Imports consist primarily of fertilisers, cement, clinker, coal, wheat, diesel and LPG, while the surrounding sugar industry ships raw sugar and molasses out through the same berths. Occasional small-vessel consignments of fertilisers and bagged cement move to neighbouring islands. About 210 vessels call annually; the terminal is currently undergoing restructuring and restoration works. For containerised cargo, Santo Domingo (Caucedo) is the principal alternative.
