Built at the end of the 19th century, San Pedro de Macoris is the oldest working harbour in the Dominican Republic, set on the Higuamo River some 60 km east of Santo Domingo on the country's south coast. Its commercial backbone is the export of raw sugar and molasses from the surrounding cane mills, complemented by bagged cement. Inbound traffic is mostly dry bulk: fertilisers, coal and cement clinker. Vessels up to roughly 198 m LOA and 7.3 m draught work alongside, while LPG is handled offshore at a single-point mooring taking ships up to 12.5 m draught. With around 210 calls a year, this is a bulk and breakbulk port rather than a full container gateway, and forwarders moving boxes should route via Caucedo (DP World) or Río Haina instead. Hinterland connections run by road toward Santo Domingo and the wider south-coast industrial belt.
