Sand and aggregates, not containers, are the highest-volume cargo crossing the Port of San Francisco — the boxes have run through deeper Oakland across the bay for decades. On California's Pacific shore, this port has carved out specialised niches: dry bulk, automobile handling, breakbulk, RoRo and project cargo. San Francisco, by contrast, remains a specialised complement for bulk, breakbulk and vehicles, with suitable berths for heavy-lift and project shipments on the bay.
