Around 1.5 million tonnes of alumina a year flow from the refinery behind San Ciprian, on the Galician shore of the Bay of Biscay, defining the port's purpose. The terminal works chiefly as a captive industrial harbour for Alcoa's alumina refinery and aluminium smelter, importing bauxite and shipping out alumina and aluminium — bulk and industrial cargo rather than containerised liner traffic. Channel depths of about 17 metres and quay depths near 12.5 metres allow it to handle large bulk carriers. Hinterland movement is by road to the plant, and there is little general commercial cargo business beyond it. Customs and import-export handling are tied to the industrial operation rather than open freight markets. Forwarders with container, breakbulk or project cargo for the region use Ferrol or A Coruña (Punta Langosteira).
