Where many Negros ports lean on a single trade, San Carlos blends roll-on/roll-off ferry traffic with agricultural cargo shipping. On the northeastern coast of Negros Occidental, its deep natural harbour is sheltered by Sipaway (Refugio) Island and a breakwater, and is run by the Philippine Ports Authority. Sugar from surrounding plantations and the long-established local mill, along with rice, makes up much of the freight. RoRo and passenger ferries cross the Tañon Strait to Toledo on Cebu, with daily sailings from operators such as Lite Shipping, FastCat and EB Aznar. Inland haulage is by road, as Negros has no railway. For larger containerised liner cargo, shippers generally use Bacolod (Banago/BREDCO), while San Carlos suits RoRo, agri-exports and regional general cargo.
