SAI Port Society runs the only commercial marine terminal on San Andrés Island (UN/LOCODE COADZ), Colombia's Caribbean free-port destination, handling containers and general cargo across a 420-metre quay with six berths and an authorised draught of 7 metres. A separate facility, Puerto Arenal, supplies the island's fuel: in 2024 it moved roughly 82,000 tonnes of MDO, Jet A-1, gasoline and diesel for power generation, the airport, fishing fleets and hotels. San Andrés has held free-port status for decades, meaning imports carry a flat 10 percent tariff and are exempt from VAT, a rule that shapes much of the local retail and cargo economy. With no rail link and only limited road network confined to the island itself, nearly all incoming freight arrives by sea or air, making the port the archipelago's lifeline for supplies. Cartagena, roughly 750 km away on the Colombian mainland, functions as the nearest major container gateway from which goods are trans-shipped to the island. In 2025 Colombia's national infrastructure agency ANI carried out a technical inspection of Puerto Arenal, signalling possible upgrades ahead.
