The name Samoa is misleading: this is not the Pacific nation but the Samoa Peninsula on Humboldt Bay in far northern California, across the water from Eureka. The former pulp-mill site here (Marine Terminal II) is being redeveloped into the Humboldt Bay Offshore Wind Heavy Lift Marine Terminal, a roughly 73-hectare facility for building, assembling and shipping floating offshore wind turbines, developed with Crowley. The harbour district describes it as set to become the second-largest wind terminal in the United States, geared to heavy project cargo such as towers, nacelles, blades and mooring lines. There is no conventional container or breakbulk liner service at this site; it is purpose-built for heavy-lift and project loads. Access is by road (US 101) and the deep channel of Humboldt Bay. General regional trade still relies on the wider Humboldt Bay/Eureka port.
