More than 50 million tons of cargo a year pass through Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan on the Mahakam River some 60 km from open water. The traffic is overwhelmingly bulk: steam coal barged down from upriver mines for export, logs and sawn timber from riverside mills, plus an oil jetty. Scheduled container liner service is minor by comparison, and because the river channel allows only around 6 m draft, larger ocean vessels often anchor at the Muara Berau estuary and load by barge. Hinterland access runs mainly along the Mahakam waterway and by road, with little rail. Dedicated container handling for the city is concentrated at the Palaran terminal upstream. For containerised import and export through East Kalimantan, the nearby deep-water port of Balikpapan is often the more practical gateway. Customs and export clearance is handled by the local Indonesian authorities.
