Nine hundred metres of quay and six mobile cranes give Salerno's container terminal, run by the Gallozzi group, an annual throughput of around 450,000 TEU. Set on the Gulf of Salerno on Italy's Tyrrhenian coast, the port pairs that box traffic with a strong roll-on/roll-off and ferry business. MSC and CMA CGM call at the container quays, while Grimaldi operates extensive RoRo and ferry services under the 'Autostrade del Mare' scheme to Sicily, Sardinia, Tunisia and Spain. This makes Salerno well suited to wheeled cargo, breakbulk and project shipments as well as containers. Depths of about 11 m limit the very largest container vessels, and motorways A2/A3 plus rail links carry cargo inland towards Naples and Battipaglia. Deep-sea transhipment is handled at nearby Gioia Tauro, with Naples offering additional general-cargo capacity.
