Salawati is an oil port, not a container gateway: it consists of a dolphin berth linked by pipeline to onshore tanks and exists to load crude. Lying off Salawati Island near Sorong in West Papua, it lifts crude oil from the surrounding Salawati Basin fields. The terminal can handle tankers of up to about 275 m length, 13 m draught and 100,000 DWT, working ship-side through loading arms rather than a conventional cargo quay. No scheduled container, breakbulk or customs-cleared general cargo moves across it. For those flows, shippers use the nearby multipurpose port of Sorong, which serves the region's fisheries, mining and forestry. Deep-sea container connections run via Makassar or Surabaya's Tanjung Perak rather than Salawati.
