Exporting Vidzeme's timber and farm produce since the 19th century, Salacgriva remains a specialised forest-products harbour at the mouth of the River Salaca on the Gulf of Riga. Its Nord Terminal reloads round timber, woodchips, peat and crushed rock from Latvia and Estonia, while local boats still land fish. Six berths along both banks, mobile cranes and open storage yards handle the roughly 40 vessel calls a year, mostly small ships, with a channel depth of under 6 m. This is not a container or liner port. For boxes and larger general cargo, shippers use Riga, and Ventspils for bulk.
