Developed during the Edo period as a key call on the Kitamaebune coastal trade, Sakata long shipped the rice and safflower of inland Yamagata. Today it remains the prefecture's only commercial port, handling some 3.15 million tonnes a year of dry bulk, bulk liquids, forest products and breakbulk at the mouth of the Mogami River. Container traffic is modest — roughly 5,500 TEU annually — so the harbour functions mainly as a bulk and project-cargo outlet rather than a box hub. A 9.4 m channel and quays to 12.5 m suit mid-sized bulkers and general-cargo vessels, and marine fuel is available. Local chemical plants established from 1940 still move manganese ore, phosphate fertiliser and ferroalloys across the wharves. Road and rail link the port to the Yamagata interior, while shippers needing scheduled container services typically route through Niigata or the Pacific gateways of Tokyo and Yokohama.
