Coal, grain, timber, oil and petrochemicals — these are the cargoes that move across Sakaide, an industrial multi-purpose port on the southern shore of Japan's Seto Inland Sea in Kagawa Prefecture. The port grew from Edo-era salt fields; after the Bannosu reclamation it was lined with chemical and machinery plants, and a Kawasaki Heavy Industries yard handles shipbuilding and major repairs alongside the commercial wharves. Public and private berths with around 12.5 m of depth and a large dry dock let it serve sizeable bulk and breakbulk vessels. It is not a container-line port, however. For boxes, shippers use Kobe or nearby Mizushima across the Great Seto Bridge, while Takamatsu offers general-cargo and RoRo alternatives in the same prefecture.
