Opened in 1899 for trade with Britain and the United States, Sakaiminato — listed here as Sakai Ko, UN/LOCODE JP SAK — grew into a major fishing and seafood-processing base for western Japan on Miho Bay in Tottori Prefecture. Today it pairs a container terminal with berths for bulk carriers, tankers, gas carriers, general cargo, reefer and passenger vessels. Around 2.7 million tonnes of domestic and foreign trade move through annually, led by coal, coke, alumina, grain, petroleum and liquefied gas. Road and rail tie the quays into the San'in region and the wider Japanese hinterland. The port handles vessels up to about 290 metres with draughts near 11.5 metres. For high-volume deep-sea container flows, however, the Pacific-coast ports of Kobe and Osaka remain the stronger options.
