Granite, timber, fertilizers, salt, animal feed, grain, petroleum products and fishery goods make up the working cargo mix at Saint-Malo, a decidedly bulk and breakbulk port in Brittany. Handling is run by Saint-Malo Stevedores, a Solent Stevedores subsidiary, moving roughly 200,000 tonnes a year across the quays. The port is also Brittany's largest ferry gateway, with about one million passengers and RoRo services by Brittany Ferries and Condor Ferries to Portsmouth, Poole and the Channel Islands. Tide gates hold water levels in the basin, since the local tidal range is among Europe's highest. Road and rail link the quays to Brittany and western France. Saint-Malo runs no deep-sea container line service, so containerised loads are better routed via Le Havre or Brest.
