Saganoseki (JP SAG) is best understood as a smelter port rather than a general-cargo gateway. The site hosts Pan Pacific Copper's Saganoseki smelter and refinery, and its quays — sized for vessels up to about 30,000 dwt — mainly load and discharge copper concentrate, refined copper and by-product sulphuric acid. Regular container-liner calls are not confirmed, so the port's role is industrial rather than commercial box handling. Alongside the works, the National Route 197 ferry links Saganoseki with Misaki on Shikoku in roughly 70 minutes, the shortest Kyushu–Shikoku car crossing and open to trucks. Shippers with containers or mixed freight rely on nearby Oita, about 20 km away, or Beppu. Road connections run through the city of Oita, into which Saganoseki was merged in 2005.
