Coal, timber, cement and petroleum products make up the bulk and breakbulk traffic at Rumoi Ko (UN/LOCODE JP RMI), a well-sheltered port on Hokkaido's Sea of Japan coast. Built between 1910 and 1933 to ship coal from local mines to Honshu, it now serves as a logistics base for the Kamikawa/Sorachi region around Asahikawa, Hokkaido's second city. There is no significant container liner service, and a berth depth of around 11 m accommodates vessels over 150 m long. Road and rail links connect the port to the Asahikawa industrial area inland. For containers and international liner services, forwarders use the larger Hokkaido ports of Tomakomai and Otaru.
