Crude oil from the Shabwa fields, piped to the coast via the Shabwa–Rudhum line, is the sole reason the Rudum Terminal (also Rudhum) exists on Yemen's Gulf of Aden coast. This is a pure oil-export facility with offshore tanker loading at an open roadstead; it handles no containers, breakbulk or general cargo. Amid the ongoing conflict in Yemen, vessels calling here must obtain prior clearance from the coalition headquarters in Riyadh, and operations have at times been suspended. For freight forwarders the terminal is relevant only to energy shipments, and only under restricted conditions. General cargo for the region moves through the Port of Aden, while crude exports can alternatively use the Ash Shihr terminal east of Aden.
