**Harbor Type:** River (Natural)
**GPS:** 42.2833, -83.1167

Set near the mouth of the River Rouge into the Detroit River, just south of Detroit, this Michigan port is built around heavy industry rather than boxes. Deep dredged docks, major repair facilities and a large dry dock support the handling of dry bulk and project cargo for the Ford Rouge complex and regional steel mills. The principal traffic is iron ore, coal and limestone aggregate, delivered by Great Lakes lake freighters. Access to the Atlantic is seasonal, via the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway, with winter ice closing navigation. Road and rail tie the port tightly into the Detroit industrial belt. For containerised or intercontinental shipments, the major US East and Gulf Coast ports are the appropriate choice.
