Where most calls are roll-on/roll-off ferries rather than freighters, Rothesay Harbor on Scotland's Isle of Bute is best understood as a ferry and community port. Caledonian MacBrayne links it to Wemyss Bay on the mainland in about 35 minutes, carrying some 725,000 passengers and 200,000 vehicles a year. As the island's principal harbour it also handles fishing, leisure and occasional cruise traffic, with quays able to take general cargo and timber, but a berth depth of roughly 1.8 m rules out container liner services. The hinterland is limited to the island's road network and the ferry link. Forwarders moving containers or larger consignments rely on the mainland ports of Greenock and Glasgow.
