Deepwater river berths of up to 540 metres along the North Wall with a minimum 8 metres at low water, plus a purpose-built RoRo linkspan, define the capability of Rosyth (UN/LOCODE GB ROY) on the Firth of Forth. Operated by Forth Ports, the harbour handles containers, dry bulk and general cargo across multiple quays, with onsite compounds for around 1,200 cars or 250 trucks. Rosyth is also a significant naval base with a large dry dock, where Babcock carries out warship work including aircraft-carrier assembly. Its Zeebrugge service — the only direct Scotland-to-Continent ferry, latterly a DFDS freight-only run — ended in 2018 after a shipboard fire, and efforts to relaunch a direct RoRo link have continued since. For containerised volume freight, Grangemouth and Greenock (Clydeport) remain Scotland's established gateways. Tidal river access upstream of the Forth bridges keeps the largest deepsea boxships away.
