Saaremaa's farming, forestry and quarrying economy gives Roomassaare its purpose: sitting on a narrow peninsula some two kilometres south of Kuressaare, it is the island's principal cargo port. Around 130,500 tonnes of freight and roughly 6,700 passengers pass through each year, with agricultural goods, timber, stone and peat dominating exports and farm machinery and groceries the main imports. These move as bulk and breakbulk rather than in containers, handled at quays equipped with storage areas and lifting cranes. A cargo-pier depth of about 5 metres keeps calls to smaller vessels, and the site also supports island passenger services and a yacht harbour. No scheduled container line or major customs operation is based here, so full-container traffic to Estonia is best routed through Muuga near Tallinn. For supplying Saaremaa itself, however, Roomassaare remains the decisive maritime gateway.
