Across the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, Rødby (Rødbyhavn) on Lolland is one half of the busy ferry axis to Puttgarden. Its freight is almost entirely rolling stock: Scandlines runs trucks and trailers on a half-hourly crossing, now supported by the all-electric freight ferry Baltic Whale for heavy lorries and dangerous goods. The port offers no container, breakbulk or dry-bulk handling — it is purely a RoRo and ferry terminal. Hinterland links are strong, with the E47 motorway and a rail line running right to the berths. The 18 km Fehmarn Belt fixed link, an immersed road-and-rail tunnel due to open around 2029, is being built between Rødby and Puttgarden and will eventually replace the ferries. Containerised or conventional cargo for Denmark moves through Copenhagen-Malmö (CMP), with Rostock the nearest box option on the German side.
