Unlike the working cargo ports of the lower Great Lakes, Rochester (US ROC), at the mouth of the Genesee River on Lake Ontario, is today a non-commercial port and harbour of refuge with berthing for passenger and pleasure craft only. The historic Port of Genesee lost its lake-cargo trade after the Erie Canal (1825) and the railroad (1853) redirected freight inland; container handling, customs clearance and bulk traffic are not offered here. For commercial cargo on the U.S. side of Lake Ontario, the Port of Oswego handles dry bulk and general goods, while Toronto and Hamilton are the principal options across the lake.
