One of the world's largest dry-bulk ports, Rizhao in Shandong province handles over 520 million tonnes of cargo a year (2023, rising toward 550 million in 2025) on the Yellow Sea. Its Shijiu and Lanqiao port areas together operate around 46 deep-water berths. Iron ore is the dominant import—about 87.7 million tonnes in the first eleven months of 2024 alone—alongside large volumes of coal, crude oil, grain and soybeans. Specialised coal berths reach loading rates above 9,000 tonnes per hour and serve Capesize and very large ore carriers. Container traffic is growing steadily—around 6.26 million TEU in 2023—but the port remains first and foremost a bulk and liquid-cargo hub rather than a pure box terminal. Imported ore feeds Shandong's steel mills, including Rizhao Steel, via rail, road and pipeline links into the hinterland. Channel and berth depths—around 14 and 11 metres, and deeper in the ore basins—allow very large bulk carriers to be worked. For purely containerised shipments, the neighbouring ports of Qingdao and Lianyungang are the stronger alternatives.
