About 280,000 tonnes of cargo and roughly 250 vessel calls a year pass through Rize, a modest breakwater port on Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast. Copper concentrate moves outbound, while wood products, coal and fertiliser are typical imports across its general and dry-bulk berths. The city is best known as the centre of Turkish tea growing, whose harvest is processed and shipped from the surrounding province. The cargo pier reaches about 7.9 metres, and no significant container liner service is confirmed here. Hinterland traffic runs along the Black Sea coastal highway, with Trabzon some 75 kilometres to the west. For containers and larger volumes, Trabzon and Samsun are the relevant alternatives.
