Timber and wood pulp from the forests of southern Norway are the mainstay cargoes of Risør, a well-sheltered harbour on the Skagerrak. The town was one of Norway's leading shipping and shipbuilding centres in the late 18th century, trading lumber chiefly with Dutch merchants. Today ferries link the surrounding islands while sailing, fishing and pleasure craft fill the harbour in summer. Risør runs no liner or container services, and the rivers flanking the port freeze from January to March. Hinterland access is by road; for containers and longer-haul freight, Kristiansand is the nearest capable port.
