Wilson Sons runs Tecon Rio Grande (BRRIG), widely rated Brazil's most automated container terminal, with four berths, a 900-metre quay and around 1.42 million TEU of annual capacity. As the country's southernmost deep-water port, Rio Grande serves the farming and industrial state of Rio Grande do Sul and the wider Mercosur market with Argentina and Uruguay. Beyond containers, its quays move soybeans and grain, fertilizers, petroleum products, vehicles and wood pulp, with grain, fertilizer and logs also shipped in containers. In late 2025 the operator secured about R$331 million (roughly USD 61 million) from the BNDES Azul fund for dredging, automation and new cranes, while more than R$1.1 billion is earmarked by 2030 to extend the quay to 1,200 metres so three New Panamax vessels can be worked at once. Hinterland links rely on road and rail into the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. Customs and export clearance run through the Receita Federal, where agricultural export peaks can lengthen waiting times. For forwarders, Rio Grande is strong for agribulk, pulp, reefer and containerised cargo from southern Brazil; alternatives include Itapoá, São Francisco do Sul and Paranaguá.
