ICTSI handles Rio de Janeiro's container traffic at Rio Brasil Terminal 1 in Guanabara Bay – about 460,000 TEU in 2025 – and is now investing R$948 million (roughly USD 175 million) to lift capacity from around 440,000 to 750,000 TEU by 2029. That still leaves Rio (BR RIO) second to Santos among South-East Brazil's box ports. The harbour is far more than containers, however: its berths handle steel, motor vehicles and auto parts, minerals and dimension stone such as ornamental granite, and Rio also serves as a supply base for the offshore oil and gas fields of the Campos and Santos basins. Customs and import clearance go through Brazil's Receita Federal, whose procedures can add dwell time and demurrage. For forwarders, Rio fits containers, breakbulk, vehicles and project cargo tied to Rio de Janeiro state; shippers needing the densest liner schedules turn to Santos (BR SSZ), or to Itapoá and Paranaguá for the south.
