Officially opened on 29 October 2025, the deep-water Rijeka Gateway terminal lifts the container capacity of Croatia's largest port (HR RJK) to a new level. A joint venture of APM Terminals (51 %, Maersk group) and the Enna group (49 %), it offers 650,000 TEU of annual capacity on a 400-metre quay dredged to 20 metres and can work vessels up to 18,000 TEU, with an ultimate design of 1 million TEU and megaships up to 24,000 TEU. Four remotely operated ZPMC ship-to-shore cranes, 15 Liebherr RTGs and two RMGs, 5G connectivity and roughly 95 % electric operation make it one of the Adriatic's most modern facilities. The older Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT), run by ICTSI, stays in service and handled just over 400,000 TEU in 2024. Rijeka channels maritime cargo toward a hinterland reaching from Zagreb into Hungary, Austria, Serbia and Slovakia, and also runs terminals for dry bulk, grain and timber (Bršica) plus the Omišalj oil terminal on Krk feeding the JANAF pipeline. Its persistent weakness is rail: the partly single-track line to Zagreb and the Hungarian border is being electrified and upgraded with EU funds. Customs clears through Croatian authorities under EU Union procedures, as this is an external EU frontier. For forwarders, Rijeka suits container, bulk and project shipments bound for Central and South-Eastern Europe, while shippers needing denser liner calls or higher rail frequency may compare Koper (SI) or Trieste (IT).
