With no railways and no inland waterways anywhere in Iceland, every container leaving Reykjavik travels onward by truck along the Ring Road. The cargo port of Sundahöfn, east of the centre, handles almost all of the country's box traffic – about 228,000 TEU and some 2 million tonnes a year. Two carriers run the quays: Eimskip, with four berths along a 900-metre wall, and Samskip at the Vogabakki terminal, together offering more than 850 reefer plugs for frozen-fish exports. Imports are dominated by consumer goods, building materials and industrial supplies; exports by seafood and aluminium products. As an EEA but non-EU port, Reykjavik operates its own Icelandic customs clearance. The new Vör cruise terminal at Skarfabakki opened in May 2026 and now handles all cruise calls, while the old harbour serves mainly fishing vessels. For northern Iceland, shippers also use Akureyri or Reykjanesbær (Helguvík).
