Roughly 60 percent of the grain exported from the U.S. Midwest leaves through the Port of South Louisiana, the Mississippi River complex headquartered at Reserve between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The Reserve grain elevator, run by ADM/GROWMARK, has a berth with about 15 metres (50 feet) alongside depth and Canadian National rail service, while the Globalplex Intermodal Terminal adds deep-draft bulk and general-cargo docks. Stretching some 87 kilometres along the river, the port is the largest in the United States by tonnage. Reserve is firmly a dry-bulk and agricultural-export location rather than a container port. It is fed by rail, road and the Mississippi barge system carrying grain down from the Midwest. For container traffic, the Port of New Orleans (Napoleon Avenue Terminal) is the relevant gateway, with further bulk capacity around Baton Rouge.
