Wind-energy components, wood pulp, scrap iron and molasses are typical of what crosses the Rensselaer quay, the east-bank side of the Port of Albany–Rensselaer some 124 nautical miles up the Hudson from New York Harbor. The Rensselaer terminal offers a 335-metre wharf with a four-hectare open storage yard, complementing the larger Albany side across the river. Together they handle bulk, breakbulk and heavy-lift project cargo, with a maximum draft of around 9.5 metres and no scheduled container line. Rail access runs over the CSX/CP-owned Albany Port Railroad, backed by the road network of New York's Capital Region. This makes Rensselaer well suited to project and heavy-lift moves into the inland Northeast. Containerised freight continues to route through the ports of New York and New Jersey.
