Kernel and Maersk put Reni back on the map: when Russia's 2022 invasion blockaded Ukraine's Black Sea ports, this Danube river-sea port became a key grain outlet, with Kernel buying a grain terminal and Maersk launching liner calls. Founded in 1816 at the tripoint of Ukraine, Romania and Moldova, Reni offers 37 berths along nearly 3,900 metres of quay and around 13 km of internal rail. It handles dry bulk, liquid and general cargo – grain, fertilisers, metal products, petroleum derivatives and vegetable oils. Barges run downstream to the Romanian ports of Galați and Brăila and onward to Constanța for deep-sea transshipment. Shallow quayside depths make Reni a river-sea rather than ocean port. For seagoing container and bulk loading, Constanța is the main gateway, while neighbouring Izmail adds further Danube capacity.
