Around 600 ship calls a year pass through Rekefjord, a specialised stone-export harbour on Norway's southern coast in Sokndal. Operator Rekefjord Stone works two adjacent quarries – Norit gabbronorite and Ansit anorthosite – shipping armourstone, aggregates and crushed rock from four deep-water quays. Consignments include 5,000-tonne barge loads bound for coastal-defence schemes abroad, such as erosion protection on the Yorkshire coast. With fairway depths above 17 metres the port takes sizeable bulkers and stone carriers, but offers no container or general-cargo line. Its activity is overwhelmingly seaward, the crushing plant feeding vessels directly at the quay. For conventional ocean or breakbulk freight in the area, nearby Egersund is the logical alternative.
