Sugar is the signature cargo of Recife: two horizontal silos hold up to 200,000 tonnes, while dedicated berths handle grain such as wheat, maize, barley and malt. Fertilizers, clinker and conventional breakbulk move across eight general-cargo berths, with just two berths reserved for containers. Boxed traffic has largely migrated to neighbouring Suape, leaving Recife focused on dry bulk, bagged sugar and project cargo. A passenger terminal opened in 2009 also serves a growing cruise trade. As a Brazilian public port, Recife provides standard customs clearance for foreign-trade cargo. Road and rail connect the quays to Pernambuco state and the wider northeastern hinterland. Shippers needing container services route via Suape, about 40 km to the south.
