Discovered as a heavy-oil field in the 1930s, Ras Gharib grew into one of Egypt's oldest petroleum centres and today functions purely as a crude-oil loading terminal on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez. Operated by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, it loads crude through three offshore single-buoy moorings (north, central and south), the southernmost handling larger tankers. The terminal handles roughly 24 vessels and about 3.9 million tonnes a year, almost entirely crude oil. It is not a container, breakbulk or RoRo port, and no commercial customs clearance for general cargo is confirmed. Inland links are limited to the coastal road serving the oilfields, with no rail connection. Forwarders moving containers or general cargo should route via Sokhna (Ain Sokhna) or Adabiya near Suez, while Ras Gharib remains a dedicated tanker-loading point for Egypt's oil sector.
