A 550-metre quay and a stern-loading RoRo berth let the Port of Kalajoki—also known as Rahja—handle sizeable parcels without a crane, backed by more than 60,000 square metres of covered storage on the Gulf of Bothnia. The port specialises in forest products, dry bulk and heavy project cargo such as wind-turbine components for northern Finnish industry. Sawn timber and bulk goods make up most of the throughput, with containers handled on a smaller scale. A relatively shallow fairway limits calls to coasters and smaller bulk carriers. The hinterland of North Ostrobothnia is served by road and rail. For deeper-draught vessels and container services, nearby Kokkola to the south and the steel port of Raahe are the usual alternatives.
