Where many ports balance containers against bulk, Cherbourg (FR CER) is built around the rolling freight of ferries: about 91,900 trailers crossed it in 2024, some 84,500 of them to or from Ireland, roughly half travelling unaccompanied. Sitting on the Cotentin peninsula along the English Channel, it runs Ro-Ro ferry services chiefly to Ireland (Rosslare, Dublin) and to the United Kingdom, operated by Brittany Ferries and Irish Ferries. After Stena Line withdrew its Cherbourg–Rosslare service in October 2025, Brittany Ferries expanded its Irish links and is maintaining seven weekly rotations through 2026. A rail-ferry (ferroutage) terminal opened in July 2025, linking unaccompanied trailers to a multimodal corridor toward Mouguerre near the Spanish border and aiming to shift up to 25,000 trailers a year from road to rail and sea, with six weekly round trips from September 2025 and a daily service planned by 2030. Cherbourg is also a base for the offshore wind industry, with turbine-blade manufacturing on site. It is not a container liner port; for boxes the nearest gateway is Le Havre, while Roscoff offers further Channel ferry capacity.
