Punta Arenas (CL PUQ), founded in 1848 on the Strait of Magellan, is the capital of Chile's Magallanes y Antártica Chilena region and the world's southernmost conventional seaport with regular freight services. The port handles around 360,000 tonnes of cargo and approximately 13,000 TEU per year, serving as the critical supply axis for Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean austral islands. Several piers accommodate general cargo, bulk and container vessels; growing traffic is increasingly straining port capacity. Punta Arenas is also a key embarkation hub for Antarctic research expeditions and polar cruises. The Magallanes region is rapidly emerging as a global green hydrogen hub: in April 2026 the Regional Commission for the Use of Coastal Border unanimously approved the Cabo Negro port project (28 km north-east of Punta Arenas) for green hydrogen export and salmon aquaculture. HNH Energy received approval for an 11 billion US dollar green ammonia megaproject with 194 wind turbines, a seawater desalination plant and a dedicated works port (construction 2027, commercial operations 2030). The HIF Cabo Negro e-fuels facility is designed for 173,600 tonnes per year of e-Methanol and 70,000 tonnes per year of e-Gasoline. Hinterland access is constrained by geography; overland transport through Argentine territory is unavoidable for parts of the region.
