Serving Chile's Magallanes region and the gateway to Antarctica, Punta Arenas (CL PUQ) is the largest port for thousands of kilometres at the southern tip of South America. Set on the Strait of Magellan, it is a base for Antarctic research vessels and South Atlantic fishing fleets, and the main supply point for Patagonia. Cargo includes general and containerised goods, oil and gas products and regional bulk; because it is an open roadstead, some cargo is worked via lighters and outlying installations such as Cabo Negro. With no railway, hinterland distribution is essentially by road. For forwarders, Punta Arenas is chiefly a supply and Antarctic-logistics hub rather than a conventional liner container port. Larger container volumes for central Chile move through San Antonio or Valparaíso, but in the far south Punta Arenas has no rival.
