Vado Ligure (IT VDL) shows how a mid-sized Italian port can punch above its weight: since 2019 its Vado Gateway has been the country's first semi-automated deep-sea container terminal, owned by APM Terminals, Cosco Shipping Ports and Qingdao Port. The 700-metre quay offers 17.25 m of water and four ship-to-shore cranes, handles ultra-large container vessels and is designed for around 900,000 TEU a year. Alongside sits the Reefer Terminal, the Mediterranean's largest fruit-dedicated logistics facility, adding some 250,000 TEU so that Vado handles over one million TEU annually. The cargo mix is containerised general goods plus temperature-controlled reefer traffic, above all fruit and perishables. Finished-vehicle logistics is a fast-growing line: RoRo volumes have risen in triple digits, and the Vehicle Logistic Vado joint venture has created dedicated space for car handling. The World Bank's Container Port Performance Index ranked Vado among the top 20 ports worldwide for improvement between 2020 and 2024. Motorway A10 and rail links connect the terminal to Piedmont, Lombardy, southern Switzerland and southern Germany, with customs cleared through the Italian customs agency at this EU external border. For forwarders it is a credible alternative to congested Genoa, particularly for reefer flows, while Genoa and La Spezia are the nearby fallbacks when capacity is tight.
