At the mouth of the Root River on the western shore of Lake Michigan, 21 nautical miles south of Milwaukee and 60 north of Chicago, Racine is today used mainly by pleasure craft and fishing tugs rather than commercial shipping. With a channel depth of about 3.4 m and no scheduled container or customs service, it is not suited to international breakbulk or box cargo, despite database labels suggesting otherwise. The harbour was a grain and trade port in the 1800s, serving local farmers. For commercial freight, Milwaukee to the north or Chicago to the south are the appropriate ports.
