Petro Rabigh—a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Japan's Sumitomo Chemical processing around 400,000 barrels of crude per day—defines the port of Rabigh on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, some 66 nautical miles north of Jeddah. A deep-water site sheltered behind an offshore barrier reef, the port mainly handles crude oil, refined products, petrochemicals and project-related plant cargo. It is not a general container gateway: regional liner and box traffic is served by the nearby King Abdullah Port in King Abdullah Economic City. Hinterland links run via the coastal highway toward Jeddah and Makkah. For general cargo and containers, King Abdullah Port and Jeddah Islamic Port are the relevant alternatives.
