Iron ore, coking coal, steel coil, timber and outsized wind-turbine sections set the rhythm of Raahe (Swedish: Brahestad) on Finland's Gulf of Bothnia coast. The port exists largely to serve SSAB Europe's steelworks — the former Rautaruukki plant, in blast-furnace operation since 1964 — whose imports and exports keep cargo flowing year-round and make Raahe Finland's fourth-busiest port by import tonnage, at roughly 5.2 million tonnes of foreign trade annually. Operations are split across three areas: the SSAB works harbour, the deep-water port and Lapaluoto, handling bulk, breakbulk, steel products, containers and project consignments. The year-round Bothnia Bulk service links Raahe with Luleå and Oxelösund, with icebreaker support needed in winter. Road and rail carry cargo to and from the northern Finnish hinterland. Forwarders moving pure container volumes will find HaminaKotka or Helsinki stronger, while bulk and steel cargo is best served here; Oulu to the north and Kokkola to the south are the nearest alternatives.
