For the copra, tea and timber growers of Mozambique's Zambézia province, Quelimane is the nearest sea outlet — a river port on the east bank of the Bons Sinais, a short run from the Indian Ocean. Its roughly 230 m concrete pier handles around 85,000 tonnes and about 4,900 TEU a year: copra, sisal, tea, edible oil, timber, cotton and cashew make up most of the trade. A shallow, tidal approach channel of roughly 4.9–6.1 m caps vessels at about 150 m length, and ships drawing more than 3.5 m face navigational restrictions. Inland waterways link the port to the Zambezi, used among others for barging sugar from the Sena estate. Containerised volumes and larger drafts are better served by Beira to the south or the deep-water port of Nacala to the north.
