Roughly 302 kilometres of slurry pipeline connect the Antamina mine high in the Andes to Punta Lobitos, the private shipping terminal that serves one of the world's largest copper and zinc operations. Concentrate arriving at this Huarmey site is dewatered, stored and loaded onto bulk carriers, with copper and zinc as the main products and molybdenum, silver and lead recovered as by-products. More than 60 percent of the tonnage is destined for China, the remainder spread across some fifteen countries. This is not a multipurpose facility: there are no container services, no general breakbulk handling and no open customs gateway for third-party cargo, and ships work an open roadstead with around 12.5 metres at anchorage. Forwarders moving general freight for the Áncash region should plan instead for Salaverry, Chimbote or the main national port of Callao.
