Punta Cardón is best understood not as a commercial trading port but as the marine outlet of the Paraguaná Refining Complex, among the largest refineries in the Western Hemisphere at roughly 971,000 barrels per day. On the southwest coast of the Paraguaná Peninsula in the Gulf of Venezuela, it exports crude oil and refined products that arrive by pipeline from the Lake Maracaibo fields. The terminal handles tankers up to about 120,000 DWT and 13.8 m draught, moving on the order of 16 million tonnes a year. Dry cargo can be accommodated in limited cases, but there is no genuine container or breakbulk service here. Hinterland links are confined to the refinery's internal and road connections, with no rail access. Forwarders handling general or containerised freight should look to Puerto Cabello or La Guaira instead.
