Long before Bacolod built its own wharves, Pulupandan was the principal port of Negros Occidental — the shallow, gently sloping beaches at the provincial capital made a deep-water quay impractical, so trade settled here, about 25 km to the south. Today it is a small multipurpose port whose mainstay is the sugar economy: raw sugar, molasses and alcohol lead the export mix, alongside general cargo, lumber, fertilisers, livestock and metal goods. Operations are run by Negros Coastal Terminals Inc. (NCTI) under a multi-year concession. With a charted channel depth of only about 3.4 m, larger vessels work from the open roadstead and there is no meaningful container line service. Road links connect the port to the sugar haciendas of the interior and to Bacolod. For containers and long-haul trade, the Banago wharf at Bacolod and the port of Iloilo across the strait are the usual alternatives.
