Roughly 1.42 million TEU and about 32.2 million tonnes of cargo moved across Penang's quays in 2024, making it the main container gateway for northern Malaysia and southern Thailand. The port sits on the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping arteries. Its core asset, the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT), offers seven berths along some 1,500 metres of quay and a capacity of up to two million TEU a year. Gazetted as a Free Commercial Zone in February 2021, the terminal supports duty-free import, export, transhipment and value-added work, positioning Penang as a transhipment link between the Bay of Bengal and the Far East. Alongside containers it handles breakbulk, dry bulk and project cargo. Hinterland links run by motorway toward Kuala Lumpur and southern Thailand and by rail across peninsular Malaysia. Planned expansions aim to lift quayside capacity well beyond today's roughly 2.3 million TEU. For very large box volumes or mega-vessel calls, Port Klang and Tanjung Pelepas to the south are the higher-capacity alternatives.
